Industrial decline and resilience in the European Mediterranean periphery. Territorial and sectoral analysis in the region of Valencia (Spain) during…

2019

Trade Openness and the Skill Premium An Inverted - UU Relation?

2016

Relying on linked employer–employee data from the German manufacturing sector in 1996–2010, I study the relation between the share of exporting establishments and the skill premium within narrowly defined industries. I document that the skill premium tends to be higher in industries with a larger share of exporting establishments. However, once unobserved industry heterogeneity is taken into account, the empirical evidence suggests an inverted-‘U’ relation between the share of exporting establishments and the skill premium.

Competitividad Del Sector Manufacturero En Ammrica Latina Tendencias Y Determinants (Competitiveness of the Manufacturing Sector in Latin America Tre…

2014

Estimating Verdoorn law for Italian firms and regions

2011

In empirical regional economics, returns to scale are typically estimated at the regional level in search for evidence on alternative theories of growth and agglomeration. However, returns to scale may also have a firm-level dimension. In this paper, we exploit micro level data and estimate the dynamic Verdoorn law in a multilevel-setting, where returns to scale are obtained simultaneously for the micro and the regional level. Using Italian firm-level data and the NUTS-3 level of aggregation, we estimate the classic and augmented versions of Verdoorn law for the manufacturing sector, and the rest of the economy for comparison. Our results show that increasing returns to scale co-exist at bo…

Safety Culture: The Prediction of Commitment to Safety in the Manufacturing Industry

1998

This paper reports one aspect of a large-scale study of safety culture in 13 companies operating in the manufacturing sector in the UK. The study is based on data collected from three different domains of measurement relevant to the description of safety culture: workplace assessments, a survey of employee attitudes to safety – including questionnaire and interview data – and company accident records. The data described in this paper concern the prediction of perceived commitment to safety from employees' attitudes to safety as reported in a self-administered questionnaire. Commitment to safety was used as a marker of the strength of the organization's safety culture. The data showed that e…

The architecture of employee attitudes to safety in the manufacturing sector

2002

This study examines the relationships between components of organisational safety climate, including: employee attitudes to organisational and individual safety issues; perceptions of the physical work environment and perceptions of workplace hazards; and relates these to self‐reported levels of safety activity. It also attempts to replicate the explicative model derived by Cheyne et al. in a similar study within the manufacturing sector. Data were collected from a large manufacturing organisation using a questionnaire. A total of 708 valid questionnaires were returned and formed the basis for the subsequent analyses. These data showed that a common structure of attitudes to safety issues a…
